Over the course of the superintendent certification program, my level of knowledge and expertise has grown immensely. As I reflect on my level of competency for each domain, it is apparent that the course content has allowed me to deepen my understanding of the superintendent domains and competencies.
Within Domain 1, the self-reflection when compared to the one completed in EDLD 5396, shows that I have moved to a level of “S” in almost all areas. I will continue to focus on professional growth opportunities to strengthen my knowledge related to competency 4. Since this competency relates directly to working with the school board, I believe this is an area that will improve with on the job training. In most districts, the superintendent is really the only district administrator that has a high level of interaction with the board, so I am confident that this is an area that will improve once I am in a position to work more closely with the school board.
Within Domain 2, I realize that as I prepare to finalize my Superintendent certification program I will need to improve my knowledge about secondary curricular issues. Also, my understanding of all of the extra-curricular programs that exist will need to be deepened. I feel competent in these areas but will need to address them in my professional development plan in order to move to a level of “strength.”
Within Domain 3, the area of finance is now rated as “C”; however I will need to include professional development activities to deepen my knowledge in this area. After participating in the courses, I now feel competent with my skills, but the district budget and financial management is an area that I need to grow in. I am anticipating that I will have an opportunity to learn more about these areas as my opportunity to be more involved in district level leadership increases.
