The conference with my site supervisor began with a discussion about the basic components and requirements of the internship plan. We briefly reviewed the competencies and standards, before discussing the 38 activities that were included on the draft intern plan. My site supervisor had skimmed over the proposed activities, so we took advantage of the time during the meeting to discuss a few of the activities in depth.
My site supervisor liked that my intern plan was intentionally designed to help me build experience with district level operations and programming. We discussed the importance of broadening my knowledge base beyond the elementary level. Since most of my experience is at the elementary level, we examined the activities and discussed how they would help me achieve this goal. She also commented on how important it is to keep academics and instruction as the focus of all the activities, since ultimately it is our responsibility to the students to ensure we are making decisions to meet their academic needs.
A recommendation was made during the meeting, which I have incorporated in my revised intern plan. My site supervisor stated that I should include an activity that deals with the K-12 college and career initiative. In the near future, our district is planning to implement a program in which the college and readiness standards are incorporated and aligned to the district curriculum. For this reason, I revised activity 35A, so that the current issue I am analyzing is the pros and cons of implementation of a new K-12 college and career initiative. Obviously, this is something that I will have to research and learn more about.
She further stated the importance of educating myself about CATE programs. As a result, I decided to modify activity 17 so that my focus is on CATE programming. Our Coordinator of Student Services supervises this department, so I should be able to accomplish this task, while focusing on analyzing the current CATE program.
